Description
A medium size fish, it has a long, oval-shaped body, pressed on the sides. Its overall colouring is silver-grey; on the back and on the upper sides it shows numerous winding, slanting stripes, which are golden-coloured and edged with light blue. Typical is the black band edging the gill cover, as well as the convex caudal fin. Its mouth, small and slightly slanting, is placed in a low position; below, it has a very short barbel pierced at the top.

Biology
A marine species, it is common in the Mediterranean Sea and in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It lives on sandy and rocky bottoms strictly close to the coast. As a typical euryhaline, it often enters lagoons. Its eggs are very tiny (1 mm) and transparent and float as they are provided with an oily droplet.
